The Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad Cricket Stadium), also known as Motera Stadium, is a renowned international cricket venue located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It stands as the largest stadium globally, boasting a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators. Owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association, this iconic stadium hosts a variety of domestic and international cricket matches, making it one of the premier cricket arenas worldwide.
The history of this stadium traces back to its predecessor, the Sardar Patel Stadium, which occupied the same site from 1982 until its demolition in 2015. The Sardar Patel Stadium was a significant venue for cricket, hosting matches during the 1987, 1996, and 2011 ICC World Cups. However, recognizing the need for a modernized and larger facility, the Gujarat Cricket Association embarked on a monumental project to construct what is now known as the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Designed by Australia’s Populous and constructed by Larsen and Toubro, the Narendra Modi Stadium took five years to complete at an estimated cost of ₹800 crore (US$100 million). It stands as a testament to modern engineering and architectural prowess, replacing the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground as the world’s largest cricket stadium.
The stadium’s name, Narendra Modi Stadium, was officially bestowed in February 2021, honoring India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who played a significant role in the Gujarat Cricket Association and the state’s cricket development.
One of the landmark events at the stadium was the Namaste Trump event in 2020, organized during the visit of US President Donald Trump, with a record attendance of 125,000 spectators. The stadium also hosted its first Test match in 2021, featuring a day-night game between India and England.
In addition to cricket matches, the Narendra Modi Stadium boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including 4 dressing rooms, 11 center pitches, and 2 practice grounds suitable for various cricket activities. It also features 76 corporate boxes, a 55-room clubhouse, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and an indoor cricket academy.
The stadium’s design is a marvel, with a two-tier structure supported by “Y shape columns” that offer unobstructed views for spectators. It utilizes advanced technology such as an LED light system on the roof and a high-tech drainage system for the playing field.
